Thornaby on Tees is on the southern banks of the river Tees with Stockton across the river on the north bank in the North East of England.

Thornaby on Tees was a Royal Charter Town until local government restructuring in the 1960`s..

It is approximately 250 miles from London by road.

It is a short ride away from Durham Tees Valley airport and has good rail links with all of the major North East towns.

The  town was mentioned twice in the Doomsday Book.

Its  oldest building, St Peter's church on Thornaby Green, dates back to the 11th & 12th Centuries. The church is said to be one of the oldest and smallest buildings in the Tees Valley, still in full use for weddings, funerals, baptisms and christenings.
 

Modern day Thornaby has a varied mix of housing ranging from houses around the affluent Village Green which date from the early 1700`s through to the terrace housing in North Thornaby dating from the early 1900`s then post war housing in central Thornaby from the 1940`s and the area of the Airfield which was built upon in the 1960`s. Add to this the very recent builds on the Airfield, Pottery Bank and the newly remodelled Mandale Estate.   

Thornaby probably has more parks and green spaces than any other comparable town in the area.

With the Village Green and River Banks, recognised Nature Reserves such as The  Black Bobbies Field ,Horseshoe Bend, Basselton Woods, Thornaby Wood and a collection of parks such as Village, Littleboy, Victoria, Pleasure Gardens and Linear Park , the town has over 60 acres of land that belongs to the people of Thornaby for recreation. Smaller areas such as Stainsby Wood, Thornaby Low and High Woods and Cassies Field make the town one of the greenest around and if used properly any of these areas can be used for walking , picnicking and a free source of outdoor fun. One other area to include is Thornaby Cemetery which is now a Green Flag area and has won the award for best Cemetery in England.
